Did you know BAYS offers indoor field hockey for our 5th-12th grade athletes? 2024-2025 represents our 4th official season! (For club-level teams, please check out the BAYS Field Hockey Club page)
Indoor Field Hockey Overview: Indoor and outdoor field hockey are similar. The indoor game is faster and requires more control because it is played on a smaller, hard, flat court surface. Indoor improves player’s stick skills and field vision.
A few indoor hockey details:
- Sidelines are replaced with sideboards (“boards”). There is no sideline out of bounds, unless the ball jumps the boards, and the ball rebounds quickly off the boards in play.
- Six players are allowed on the court at one time – that’s five field players and one goalkeeper compared to the 11 in outdoor. Instead of the typical forward, midfield, defense, positions are divided into two categories: Attackers and Defenders. Although there are specific roles, everyone must play defense, just like outdoor.
- Players are not not allowed to lift or hit the ball outside of the circle in indoor. Players are only allowed to push, pass, deflect, or dribble the ball.
Practices: All practices are at Odenton Sports Center in Odenton, MD. Each athlete should have the following at each practice: indoor stick, shinguards, mouthguard, water bottle, and BAYS reversible practice pinnie. Goalies will be provided gear.
Uniforms: Recreational players are not required to purchase a BAYS field hockey uniform.
Teams: BAYS fields both middle school and high school teams.
Games: BAYS competes in the Howard County Indoor FH league. Games are Sundays at Meadowbrook Athletic Complex at 5001 Meadowbrook Ln, Ellicott City, MD. Each Sunday, teams will each compete in two 25 minute games.
