Thank you for your interest in BAYS Basketball. To help us quickly assess teams & build appropriately, we have a few new policies. Please read the below before proceeding. Continuing registration is your acknowledgment of these new policies.
- County Basketball - this is our travel program. Teams are built based on skill level. Buddy & Coach requests will NOT be considered. We may have 0, 1, or 2 teams for this program for each age group depending on tryout results. Tryouts for county basketball will be the weeks of 7 and 14 October, with more details to follow by the 1st of October for those who have registered, and Teams to be announced by 20 October. These tryouts are MANDATORY if you wish to play at the county level this year.
- Community Basketball - this is our in house rec program. Teams will be built based first on availability for practice nights. Practice nights are selected by the coach from available time slots. We will then buddy requests when possible. Evaluations will be held the week of 21 October with Teams established by 1 November. Evaluations for Community basketball are not mandatory however they are highly encouraged. Those who attend Community evaluations will be given priority over those who do not when it comes to fulfilling buddy requests.
- Availability - players are added to teams that practice on a night without conflict. When registering, please note any day you CANNOT practice. If you request a buddy and they MUST practice on a Tuesday and your child CANNOT practice Tuesday, they will not be on the same team.
- Coach requests - no longer a guaranteed option. Our coaches will be given a guaranteed pick of one player (in addition to their child if they have one playing) for their team. If you would like that extra player on your child's roster, consider volunteering to be a head coach. During the Team Building process, we will look at accommodating additional requests but cannot guarantee them as we are trying to build evenly balanced Teams.
- Buddy requests - 2 player MAX and must reciprocate. If your child A requests buddies B&C, in order to be considered, B should request A&C, and C should request A&B at registration. Our goal is to balance teams evenly. If 3 players request one another, as long as there is no conflict for practice night, we can make sure that happens. Unfortunately in the past there have been too many requests of a player listing 9 buddies and getting upset when the 1 or 2 we couldn't honor were the "best friends and most important to be together". No matter how experienced or new to basketball a group of 3 friends might be, we can balance skill level between teams.
- COED & Clinic Basketball - this is our clinic style for ages 4-5 and our 4v4 style for ages 6-7. Since play is only on weekends, the conflict question is not as big of an issue. If you CANNOT do morning or afternoon please note in your registration. Since there is no scoring or standings in this age group, balanced rosters are not as big of a necessity. We will honor as many buddy requests as possible for these divisions. There will be no tryout or evaluation for anyone under the age of 8 and in this league, with notification of Team placement coming by mid-November.
Welcome to the Broadneck Youth Sports website. If you are looking for information about the basketball program, please use the navigation on the left hand side for your particular age level. Our Basketball Programs Include:
Clinic - This is a coed group for kids ages 4 and 5 where they will play on Saturday's starting in December. The focus on this group is introducing kids to the sport and having fun! The kids will not be broken out into Teams for this, instead it will be two to three larger groups (depending on the number of registrations) which will be further broken out into skill stations each week. Buddy requests for each group will be honored for this age group.
Community - This is our in house community, or Rec, league and has two options based on age.
Coed - This is for kids ages 6 and 7 where they will practice and play on Saturday's starting in December. Buddy requests for Teams will be honored for this age group. There are no evaluations for this age group.
8-13 Boys & Girls - This league has one practice during the week and one game on the weekends, broken out into 2 year age groups. This league is designed to play other kids in the BAYS program, not other teams in the county. We will do our best to honor buddy requests in these age groups, but may not always be able to.
County - This is a competitive league where we will be playing in the league run by Anne Arundel County Park and Rec for boys and girls ages 8-17. Some of the older teams will also have an opportunity to participate in other leagues, or tournaments, during the winter season. If you are unsure whether to play County or Community, please register for County and tryout. If your son or daughter tries out for County and does not make a County team, they will be automatically assigned to a Community team, and you will be refunded the difference in registration costs. While BAYS does run tryouts to ensure that every kid receives a fair evaluation, Coaches do have an input in the final roster. If anyone is interested in coaching a county team and would like more information on how teams are developed, please contact Bob Gregory and TJ Davis
Select - This is a new program that we are offering in conjunction with Broadneck High School, in the Spring and starts in 6th grade. This will be a highly competitive league where we will be playing in the leagues run by Anne Arundel County, Howard County and tournaments with AAU and other travel teams. There will be tryouts held in early to mid March. Please contact Bob Gregory.
The age bracket your child will play in is based on their age as of September 1st! Anne Arundel County allows you to play up into County basketball as long as your son or daughter is 8 years old by the start of the first game, which is typically around 12/1, but no telling when that'll be this year. If your child is 7 years old and you are interested in him or her trying out for an 8U county team, please sign up for the 6-7 league and send an email to [email protected] and we'll make sure that they get to try out for the 8U team.
